Funny How Things Turn Out

markproxy Gorgeous melancholy EP. Jamie Fanning's voice has depth, warmth, and a touching sadness reminiscent of Weyes Blood in its ability to be at once distant and intimate. Rich instrumentation. Great songwriting, with melodies and harmonic progressions that feel to me like they were strongly influenced by 70s singer-songwriters (Carole King and Carly Simon come to mind... but with a more dreamlike vibe). The band nailed a subdued, nuanced soundscape that fits the vocals really, really nicely. Favorite track: Kitchen Table.

about

Blending dreamlike beauty, confronting starkness and a hummable catchiness is no easy task, yet Melbourne’s Feign Jima (pronounced Jee-mah) does just that - with absolute aplomb - on her second release Funny How Things Turn Out.

Never one to be shackled to a sound or style, Funny How Things Turn Out sees Feign Jima’s commanding vocal work shine across a range of musical backdrops: from lush, lulling dreamscapes, to flashes of psych-tinged nostalgia and sparse, gently-strummed confessionals. Feign Jima possess a voice that captivates and soothes in equal measure. A voice of warmth and strength; but one that often belies a haunting honesty.

Healing, hope and growth lay at the heart of Funny How Things Turn Out. If Feign Jima’s debut offering Out of Myself led listeners along garden paths and through moments of sundrenched wistfulness, Funny How Things Turn Out sees Feign Jima inviting listeners into a far more introspective and personal world. Across these four vignettes, Feign Jima casts an intimate lens over relationships and experiences (both her own and those observed from afar) and is gifted glimmers of clarity and understanding - as captured on “Ultimate Defender”. While a piece like the haunting “Kitchen Table” shows that some wounds remain more than a little raw. Rarely has catharsis and self-reflection been captured so beautifully and honestly.

The lyrics, arrangements and themes found across Funny How Things Turn Out exhibit a song-writing maturity and nous well beyond Feign Jima’s years, yet an alluring sense of fragility and vulnerability remains scattered throughout. There is a hope and yearning that burns brightly at the core of this EP – a recognition that while hearts and minds will strain and break, it’s funny how things turn out when you start piecing them back together again.
